No introduction. We go right to the piece.
View: A black screen. We can only make out the howling of wind. A small bit of white smoke begins to drift from the right side of the screen. The smoke continues across the screen as the picture begins to get lighter. We begin to see a jungle clearing filed with smashed trees and debris from a plane. The movement of the smoke is now seen as the camera moving its way across the view from left to right. The camera passes bits of broken metal and crates, the wood smashed on impact. The scene changes to show the plane's tail section which lays broken and smashed. The rudder remains connected to the rest of the tail by a single connection. The scene changes again to show the broken half of a wing assembly. The two engines hang from under the wing, one completely blackened from lightning and flame. The props on the engines are heavily dented and some have even broken off. The scene changes again to show the remains of the cockpit, the glass on one side smashed. We can see from a distance blood covering the inside of the smashed windshield. All the while, the camera moves from left to right, only the sound of the wind is heard and the only movement is that of the smoke.
The camera moves across another pile of debris. It slowly settles on one part where we begin to hear the moaning of a female. A large metal piece moves slightly and we see a bloody hand poke out from underneath. It shakes as it tries to get hold of the metal piece and the moaning gets a tad louder.
Jane: (From off screen.) She's over here!
Jane runs into the scene and begins to try and pull the metal piece from where it lays. We can see that she is favoring her right leg. She also wears a bandage on her right arm. She is still dressed in the beige jungle coverall from the previous chapter but we can see some tears in it. After a second, Quinn also runs into the screen and begins to help Jane. She is also dressed in her jungle coverall but has a large bandage on her right forehead. The two of them are able to tip over the metal fragment and shove it out of the view. We see a bloodied Daria laying partly underneath another fragment. We can see from this distance her glasses are smashed and a trickle of blood is leading from a wound on her forehead.
Quinn: (Turning off the screen towards where she came from and yelling.) Lynn! We found her!
Jane: (Ditto.) Bring the first aid kit! (She kneels down beside Daria and looks her over. She speaks softly.) Daria? Can you hear me?
Daria: (A tad lost like she has just woken up.) Jane? Quinn? (Stumbling a bit with her train of thought.) What happened? (A pain goes through her head. She raises a hand to hold it.) Oww, my head. The last thing I remember is throwing up in the barf bag over your stupid chips and...
Quinn: (Also kneeling down on the other side of Daria.) Daria, don't try to talk. Just hold on. (She turns off screen again.) Lynn!
Daria: (Turning towards Quinn now and completely lost.) Quinn, I'm fine. I just don't remember where I...
Lynn comes running into view with a fairly large red bag with a red cross symbol on its flap in her hands. She runs over to Daria and kneels down nearest to her head. She quickly opens her bag and pulls out a sterile pad which she rips open and presses against Daria's wound.
Lynn: Thank god, we couldn't find you and... Lane, hold that there good and tight.
Jane holds the pad against Daria's forehead who winces as Lynn pulls out some wrap and starts going around Daria's head with it to hold the bandage in place.
Daria: (Still out of it.) What happened?
Lynn: Just be quiet a second, Daria.
Lynn has pulled out a small flash light and is now looking at Daria's eyes.
Daria: (Trying to push the light away from her eyes.) Get that thing away from me. (Beginning to come around, she looks at Quinn for answers.) Quinn, what is going on?
Quinn: (Still a tad shaken up.) Daria, we crashed into the side of a mountain.
Daria: (Trying to understand.) The side of a mount... What the hell?...
Jane: Daria, do you remember anything?
Lynn: (Still looking Daria over.) Actually what is the last thing you remember?
Daria: (Trying to think.) I remember sitting in the plane trying not to throw up again when Lane asked for her damn chips and then... (She stumbles a bit trying to think and then turns white with a look of horror on her face.) Oh my god. I remember Mary Sue yelling out and then ducking down and then... (She starts to shake.)
Lynn: (Gripping her shoulders and trying to get her attention.) Daria, you're fine. You have to relax!
Daria: (After a bit and taking some deep breaths. She looks into Lynn's eyes.) I remember reaching out and grabbing your hand.
Lynn: (Holding up a hand. We can see small marks of blood on it. She smirks slightly.) And I still remember where you dug your nails into my hand. (Beat.) I can still feel it also.
Daria: Um, sorry?
Lynn: As long as you're alive, I think I can forgive you for anything right now. (Turning to the other two.) We need to get this last piece off of her.
The three stand up and remove the piece of metal that was holding Daria down. Daria begins to prop herself up but Lynn reaches out a hand.
Lynn: Wait a minute. I want to look you over.
Daria: (Laying back down some but still with her head up.) Since when did you become Miss. Nightingale?
Lynn: Since I took an advance first aid course a few years back and some follow ups over the years. (Beat and then with a smirk.) When you're around someone like AP all the time, it's probably a good idea.
Daria: (Laying back down as Lynn starts checking her for broken bones. Also with a smirk.) I guess that that would be a good idea.
Jane: Yea, she's fine.
Quinn: (With concern.) Thank god.
All three look at her.
Daria: Is that a bit of concern in your voice that I hear, Quinn?
Quinn: Mom would kill me if you had died. (She wraps her arms around herself to control a shiver.) Plus there's been enough death around here this morning.
Daria sits up real fast on that line. A little too fast as her forehead reminds her that it's there with a sharp pain. Daria puts a hand to her forehead.
Daria: Oww! Son of a bit... Dead? Who's dead?
Lynn, Quinn, and Jane just look at the ground and look sad. Daria looks around in near horror still holding her head. Again her forehead is there to remind her.
Daria: Oww! Who's dead?
Ext. View: The camera focuses on a long, low pile of rocks with a rough, wooden cross stands at its head. A dark brown captain's hat sits on the cross. We can see some dark stains on the cap. It looks like dried blood that someone has tried to wipe off.
Ext. View: A different angle of the grave but we see Vincent standing there beside it, his head bowed in what we assume to be prayer. After a beat, the four girls come walking up behind him. Daria is also limping slightly and is being supported by Lynn. Jane goes up to Vincent and puts an arm around him. He doesn't react.
Jane: (Concerned.) Dad?
Vincent: (A slight smile goes across his face.) Jane, I've already told you. You're old enough to call me Vincent.
Jane: Are you ok?
Vincent: Yea, it's just something you never get used to.
Jane: (Looking at the grave.) She was a friend, wasn't she?
Vincent: (After a beat.) She was more then that, Jane.
Jane looks at Vincent with confusion. A look of understanding goes across Lynn's face and she begins to pull the other two away from the scene.
Jane: (Confused.) I don't understand?...
Vincent: (Still looking at the grave.) Jane, I love your mother very much and I know she loves me. (Beat.) Jane, we're always traveling and out in the world. We don't have a whole lot of time for each other.
Jane: (Still confused.) I still don't understand...
Vincent: Jane, about 25 years ago, I met Mary Sue on another photo expedition to the Arctic to study polar bears. We were on assignment for four long months. Both your mom and I understand that we are apart from each other for great lengths. We have an understanding that...
Jane: (Getting angry.) Excuse me?
Vincent: Now Jane. You have to understand...
Jane: You were lovers?
Vincent: When I found out she was the pilot, I thought about trying to change the assignment but I decided that you would have to find out the truth sooner or later.
Jane: (Still angry.) You were lovers?
Vincent: Jane...
Jane's standing there getting frustrated, throwing her arms around in the air but she can't figure out what to say. She finally storms off with a huff. Vincent watches her go and then turns back to the grave.
Vincent: You were right. She's going to need time to understand.
Vincent stands there for a second as if he's listening to something.
Ext. View: Outside the plane near one of the wings. Lynn and Vincent have a large map spread out across a section of broken wing with a laptop computer nearby. Quinn is pulling the remains of her luggage out from the plane while Daria is going through her own backpack. Jane, who we can tell is still fuming, is noisily going through a crate marked "Foodstuffs" on the outside. After a minute, Daria pulls out her spare set of glasses, closes up her backpack and limps over to where Lynn and Vincent are standing.
Lynn: (Looking up.) Still hurt?
Daria: (A nod as she changes glasses and leans against another part of the wing.) A bit but I'm beginning to feel better. (Beat.) So, do we know where we are?
Vincent: (Looking at the laptop.) Yes, we do. It looks like most of the computer gear made it through the crash without a problem. The GPS in this laptop is working fine.
Quinn: (Looking up.) GPS? What's that?
Vincent: (Still looking at the laptop.) Global Positioning System. We can tell where we are within a few hundred feet.
Everyone looks at Vincent who is still studying the laptop.
Lynn: Should I ask or does someone else want to?
Vincent: (Looking up.) Oh, sorry.
Vincent writings down the co-ordinates on a slip of paper and hands then to Lynn. She takes the slip and translates the numbers onto a position on the map. Lynn slaps down her pen in disgust when she is done and turns away. Everyone except Jane and Lynn gathers around the map to see where they are. She's still messing with her crate.
Quinn, Um, all I see is large patches of green.
Lynn: (Not looking at the map.) For once, Quinn, I have to agree.
Vincent: (Downcast.) We're about 130 miles from anywhere.
Quinn: (Worried.) That's not a good thing, is it?
Daria: Unless you wanted to get away from it all.
They all except for Jane look at each other and then at the map as we fadeout to...
Commercial Hell #1:
Jane and Daria stand there side by side on the screen. They are dressed normally.
Jane: Well, it appears we're in deep doo-doo now, Daria. (Fake tension.) How will we survive?
Daria: As if Dr. Mike would kill off a major character in one of his stories.
Jane: (Under her breath.) After doing romantic lines with a cat, I know someone I would like to kill off if given the chance.
Daria: At least it wasn't a rat.
Jane: Well, there was Tom...
Daria: Doo-doo isn't how I would have worded it either, Lane.
Jane: Yea, but we've got to think of the reading audience. (Beat.) If there is anyone reading this, of course.
Daria: Good point. (Beat.) I guess we better go ahead with the commercial anyway just in case someone is out there?
Jane: We better. It will give us something to do while they set up for the next scene.
Daria: Um, isn't the next scene also at the plane's wing?
Jane: Um... (She reaches off the screen and returns with a copy of what looks to be a script. She flips through the pages quickly looking for something.) Looks like it.
Daria: So then what is this filler space for then?
Jane: Um, to pad it up to the 22 pages he's shooting for in each episode?
Daria: I doubt it. The script is pretty full as it is.
Jane: (Shrugs.) Um, so maybe Dr. Mike can go get some lunch?
Daria: Must be. (Beat.) Well, we better get on with it then. (The lighting changes slightly.) Friends, do you wake up in the morning not looking forward to your first cup of coffee of the day?
Jane: "Friends?" What is this, "Must Not See TV?"
Daria reaches out of the picture and returns with a cue card.
Daria: That's what it says, Lane. (She points to the cue card where the previous line is written. She follows along with a finger as she rereads the line.) "Friends, do you wake up in the morning not looking forward to your first cup of coffee of the day?" It's right there on the card.
Jane: Who wrote this anyway?
Daria: (She shrugs.) I hate doing copy. (She pulls out a marker out of pocket and begins to make changes to the cue card.) Just give me a second and I'll have this changed... There we go. How about that, Lane?
Jane reads over the cue card for a few seconds until a satisfied look appears on her face.
Jane: I think we can live with that.
Daria: (Looking off of the screen.) Oh look. We're out of time.
Jane: (With a smirk.) I guess we'll just have to put this off until later in the story.
Daria and Jane look at each other, shrug and then walk off on opposite sides of the picture.
Ext. View: Back at the plane's wing. A large pile of supplies is gathered on the ground while a smaller pile sits beside it. The whole group is walking around gathering stuff up from the plane, showing it to Vincent who is supervising, and then placing the items on one of the piles as per Vincent instructions. Quinn comes up with an item that she shows to Vincent who shakes his head and points to the larger pile. Quinn looks defeated.
Vincent: I'm sorry, Quinn, but your hair dryer is just too bulky to carry plus it's not needed for this trip.
Quinn: (Pleading.) But I need to take care of my hair, Vincent. I don't want it to get damaged from the sun.
Vincent: Then wear a hat, Quinn.
Quinn: (The pleading is beginning to turn into a whine.) But that will give me hat hair!
Vincent: Quinn, we've already discussed this. We have a very limited amount of weight we can carry. Jane is still limping and won't be able to carry that much anyway which limits us even further. I told you that you can bring along some of your left over make up but I'm putting my foot down on the hair dryer.
Quinn: But...
Vincent: No buts, Quinn. We have a long way to go and the sooner we leave and the lighter we are, the quicker we will get there.
Quinn sighs in defeat but carries the hair dryer over to the large pile, drops it off and returns to the job.
Ext. View: The group gathered around Vincent. They all have backpacks on that are overflowing. Jane has a walking stick to lean on. Lynn still has her first aid kit over her shoulder along with her backpack. Vincent has a shotgun and a pistol is stuck in his belt. Quinn is wearing a hat and Daria has a hatchet strapped to her backpack.
Vincent: OK, I think we're all set. Does everyone have what they were assigned to carry?
Daria: Food, a flashlight, the hatchet, my blanket and two sets of clothes.
Lynn: First aid stuff, flashlight, a canteen for water, the shovel, toilet paper,...
Daria: (In her best Beavis voice.) Heh heh. TP for my bunghole. Heh heh.
Everyon e looks at Daria with strange looks.
Daria: (Getting a tad red.) Long story. Never mind.
Lynn: (With a smirk and turning back to Vincent.) Also a blanket and two sets of clothes.
Jane: Maps, the laptop with extra batteries, more food, more toilet paper, (Everyone turns to Daria who blushes.) a blanket and two sets of clothes.
They all look at Quinn who is looking downcast.
Vincent: Quinn?
Quinn: But I need more then two sets of clothes! That's only going to last me a day.
The other three girls roll their eyes. It looks like they have had this chat before.
Vincent: (Raising his voice slightly.) Quinn, we've already talked about this. We have more important things that we need to carry to get out of here. I'm sorry but you'll just have to wash your clothes every day like the rest of us.
Quinn looks like she's about ready to cry and hangs her head.
Vincent: (In a quiet voice.) Quinn, I have to know if you're ready to leave.
Quinn: (Defeated and in a small voice.) Water tablets, the radio, a blanket, a tarp, the rope, another canteen for water, the cooking gear, my makeup and two sets of clothes.
Vincent: Once we get to the base camp, we can try and send someone back here for the rest of the equipment. Is that ok with you Quinn?
Quinn: (Kicks a root or something.) I guess...
Daria: Think of it as a fashion challenge, Quinn.
Quinn: (Still looking at the ground.) Whatever...
Vincent: And I have the tent, a blanket, the machete, the shotgun, the pistol, the lantern, more rope, and my own 2 sets of clothes. (Beat.) Um, someone is carrying feminine supplies, right?
The four girls all look at each other and small smiles appear on their faces.
Jane: Feminine supplies?
Daria: I think Lynn was carrying those.
Lynn: No, I'm sure Quinn had them.
Quinn: I thought I had given them to Jane for carrying the maps.
Jane: But I gave them back to Lynn.
Lynn: Well I gave them to Daria to carry. She has much less then I have.
Daria: And then I gave them to Quinn.
Quinn: I'm sure I gave them to Jane though.
Jane: No, I don't think so. Don't you have them, Vincent?
Vincent sighs and the girls start chuckling or smirking.
Jane: (With a smile.) I have them, Vincent.
Vincent: Fine. Now not counting Quinn's clothes, is there anything else we can think of that we need?
The four look at each other and shake their heads negatively.
Vincent: (Getting a tad serious now.) Ok, has anyone had any weapons training in the past?
Daria and Jane look immediately to Lynn.
Lynn: I have had a small bit.
Vincent pulls out the pistol, checks the safety and hands it to Lynn. Lynn just shrugs.
Lynn: No thanks. I'm already armed.
Vincent: (Surprised.) Armed?
Lynn does a flick of her wrist and a small throwing knife appears in her hand. Daria, Jane and Quinn back away very fast, surprised.
Vincent: Um, I'm not going to ask you where you got that from.
Lynn: (Smirk.) I wouldn't either.
Vincent: I would rather you carry a gun. (Beat.) Um, you're already carrying a gun, aren't you?
Lynn: (With a bigger smirk.) What do you think?
Vincent: (Uncomfortable.) Ok, then. I'll take point. I want Lynn at the back so she can cover our rear. Daria, I want you to stay with Jane to make sure she's not in too much pain. Quinn? Stick close by those two. (Beat.) Everyone understand? (All four heads nod.) Ok then, lets get in line and we can start.
Ext. View: The clearing from about 20 feet up. We see Daria and her friends in line as they walk into the jungle with Lynn turning around to give the crash scene one more look over. The camera has started a descent to rest on the grave while looking towards the point in the jungle wall where our group has disappeared. After a few seconds we hear...
Jane: (With a bit of laughter in her voice from off the screen.) Are we there yet?
Lynn: (Also from off screen.) Lane, don't start.
Daria: (Ditto.) Can't we leave her behind?
Vincent: (From off screen.) Everyone did take care of their personal needs before we left, right? (Beat.) Right? (Another beat.) All four of you? (Beat.) Well hurry up then. We haven't got all day.
The camera slowly fades with a last look on the grave site.
Ext. View: Lots of jungle plants, trees, etc. After a minute, we hear the slashing of a blade through the jungle. After a beat, we see Vincent beginning to make his way through the jungle using the machete. We see Quinn walking behind him. He looks hot and bothered.
Quinn: EWW! Can you make this path any wider? You've got that big blade thingie. All that sap is getting on my clothes. Those limbs hurt when they snap back. I walked through a spider web back there. Now I'm covered with it. I have to stop. Can I have a drink of water? Isn't that poison ivy?
This continues as they go off the screen together. Daria and Jane appear next. Jane is still limping slightly but is using her walking stick. They stop and smirk a bit.
Daria: I feel sorry for your father, Lane.
Jane: I do also. (Beat.) Think we should pull her away for a bit?
Daria: It's only been 15 minutes since we left the clearing, Lane. I hope your father can last at least a little longer then that.
Jane: I don't know. It is Quinn and she doesn't have any of her fashion buddies around.
They both look off screen where we can still hear Quinn and they shake their heads in pity.
Daria: Come on, Hop-a-Long. Let's go help your dad.
They walk off together off screen. Lynn follows up behind after a second. She looks around and then follows the rest.
Ext. View: A dried up river bed. The camera view is from over head and from the front. Lynn, now carrying the machete, has taken over point with Vincent behind her. Daria and Quinn come next with Jane at the rear. Jane is way back there.
Jane: (Singing very loudly in her poor voice.) "Fifty seven bottles of beer on the wall. Fifty seven bottles of beer. You take one down..."
Everyone else: SHUT UP!
Jane: (Still singing.) "Pass it around... Fifty six bottles of beer on the wall."
Ext. View: We're back in the jungle with lots of trees but a natural path cuts through the jungle. We see this from a side view. Quinn has point with the machete but she holds it like a dead fish. Lynn follows behind her holding the hatchet just in case it's needed. Daria and Jane are together behind her. The camera focuses on them. Jane looks like she's thinking.
Daria: (Looking at Jane.) So? (No response from Jane.) Anything you want to talk about? (Still no response. Daria decides to have some fun and starts smirking.) Lane, your singing sucks. (Still no response.) Lane, your singing is so bad, dogs don't howl, they run away. (Still no response. The smirk goes up a notch.) Lane, your singing is so bad, that MTV won't touch you.
Jane: (Not looking at Daria.) I can hear you fine, Daria.
Daria's face falls and she turns slightly red.
Jane: Don't worry about it, Daria. I know my singing is bad. (Beat. She then turns to Daria with a smile.) Wait until you hear Vincent's.
Daria: Um, sorry?
Jane: It's fine. (Beat. Gets serious.) Hey Daria. Can I talk to you about something?
Daria: Um, sure.
Jane: (Looking a tad uncomfortable.) Um, I found out something about Vincent today that I don't feel too comfortable about. (Beat.) I guess it's something that I should have know about all this time but still...
Daria: Ok. You want to talk about it?
Jane: (Thinks.) No, not yet. I just don't know that to think about it all.
Daria: You probably just need to sit down with Vincent and talk about it.
Jane: (Looking at Daria.) I kind of blew up at him when I found out.
Daria: Just give him some space. He's your father and I'm sure the two of you can work it out.
Daria and Jane look at each other and continue along the path.
Jane: (From off screen with a smirk in her voice.) So MTV wouldn't touch me, huh?
Daria: (Also off screen.) Well, not unless you wore that costume the band wanted Lynn to wear while singing for Mystic Spiral. (Beat. With a bit of worry in her voice.) Don't think like that, Lane.
After a bit, Vincent follows.
Ext. View: Another jungle view, this time by a stream. Quinn and Lynn are down by the riverbank filling up their canteens. The rest of the group is stretched out along a path relaxing. Vincent has the laptop out and is looking back and forth between it and a map. Jane appears to be munching on trail mix or something.
Quinn: (calling out over the sound of the stream.) So how far have we come now? About 50 miles, right?
Vincent: (Not looking up.) About 10 actually. Only took three hours so I guess that's good time.
Lynn: (Tightening the cap on her canteen.) Finding those paths and that river bed helped.
Vincent: The rate we're going, we should be there in about four or five days.
Quinn: (Almost dropping the canteen.) Four or five days? That long without a shower? I can't last that long.
Lynn looks up at Quinn and appears to be debating the idea of shoving her in. Daria catches her eye and shakes her head. Lynn thinks about it and then goes back to canteen filling with a shrug.
Jane: Quinn, we're all in the same boat and we're all going without a shower so don't worry about it.
Quinn: (Climbing back up the embankment.) I don't want to smell.
Lynn: Quinn, we've got soap with us. We'll be able to bathe some during the trip. Just not in a fancy shower...
Quinn: Bathe where?
Lynn: Well, in the river for one...
Quinn: (Shocked.) In the river? In that river?!? With the fish and the bugs?!?
The eyes go rolling again as everyone starts picking their stuff up and getting back in line.
Ext. View: A clearing in the jungle. Lynn and Daria are finishing setting up a large tent to one side of the clearing. Jane is tending a fire in a pit with a pair of pots on a rack over it. Quinn is sitting on a log near the firepit trying to use moisturizer on her skin. Vincent is cleaning the weapons. As they are finished, Lynn walks over to Vincent. The camera focuses on them.
Lynn: Need some help?
Vincent: (Looking up.) Nah, I'm fine. It's kind of relaxing after the hike. (He looks back at the pistol he is polishing.) Um, would you like me to clean your gun?
Lynn: If you don't mind.
Lynn starts to bend over to pull something out of her boot but they both hear something off in the jungle. Lynn taps Vincent on the shoulder and points in a direction. Vincent nods, points the pistol in front of him, and goes off in the direction Lynn pointed in. Lynn does that wrist flick, gets a knife, and goes off in a different direction. As soon as they are out of the picture, the camera rises to show the entire clearing. Home life for the rest of the group continues as before. They jump when 2 shots from Vincent's pistol, a battle cry from Lynn, and a lot of moving around are heard. They look into the jungle where Lynn and Vincent went. After a couple seconds, Lynn stands up and gives a slight smile to the rest of the group.
Lynn: Dinner?
Ext. View: The campsite. It's a lot darker now. We see Daria, Jane, Lynn, and Quinn sitting on the log from earlier eating from hunks of meat that we assume were cooked over the camp fire that is roaring in front of them.
Daria: (Talking around what she is eating.) Damn, this is good. (She takes another bite.)
Jane: (Chews and swallows.) I wonder what it is.
Lynn: It's best if you don't think about it.
Quinn: It tastes like chicken. (Beat.) Maybe it's some South American wild chicken.
Jane: Quinn, chickens aren't wild.
Quinn: Well, maybe they are here in South America.
Lynn, who is eating her own dinner in quiet, notices some movement off the screen. She sits her own dinner down on her lap and looks on in interest.
Daria: Quinn, even in South America, the chickens have been domesticated for a very long time...
Vincent enters the scene with the huge head of the snake they had caught earlier impaled on a stick. He rams it into the ground so that the head is now cooking. Daria and Quinn's eyes get real big as they see this, turn, and start to throw up their dinner over the back on the log. Jane looks at the snake head and her own dinner with renewed interest and continues to eat. Lynn just smirks and returns to eating. Vincent smiles as he moves out of the shot.
Ext. View: The scene is much later. The fire has just died down quite a lot but a coffee pot still sits above it. Daria is sitting on the log drinking coffee and looking at the sky. After a second, Jane sets into the scene. She is wearing a long tee shirt and looks very sleepy.
Daria: (Turning towards her.) Good night, Jane.
Jane does a sleepy wave to Daria that turns into a yawn. She stands there for a minute waiting for it to finish.
Jane: Are you sure you don't want me to stand watch with you, Daria?
Daria: I'm fine. After everything that happened today, I'm wired anyway and probably wouldn't be able to sleep.
Jane: Ok. (Starting another yawn.) 'Night. (She heads into the tent and pulls the cover shut.)
Ext. View: We see a full moon in the sky. Clouds pass in front of it as we hear the normal nocturnal sounds of the jungle.
Ext. View: The campsite. The fire has died down a great deal. Daria still sits on the log but is just about asleep. Every once in awhile, Daria almost falls asleep but is able to wake herself up. After the 5th or 6th time, she rises off the log and starts moving around, swinging her arms back and forth.
Daria: I've got to stay awake until Lynn takes over for me at 2.
Daria continues to walk back and forth waking herself up. After a couple of laps, she grabs her mug off of the ground and goes back over to the firepit to pour herself another cup of coffee. She tips the empty coffeepot over and isn't surprised to discover only a few drops.
Daria: I guess it's time to make another pot.
As Daria digs around in a backpack looking for some more coffee as we hear a watch alarm from with in the tent. We hear some female grumbling, a few groans and then see Lynn stick her head out of the tent.
Lynn: Coffee?
Daria: (Putting the coffee pot back on the firepit.) Coming up.
Lynn nods and retreats back into the tent. After a bit more scuffling, she steps out of the tent fully dressed in what appears to be some type of military uniform army surplus coverall with lots of pockets. Lynn goes over to a backpack, grabs what appears to be toilet paper and goes off into the jungle. Daria looks after her in surprise. Lynn returns after a short time, returns the toilet paper, grabs a mug from where they are drying from dinner, sits down beside Daria and holds out the mug. Daria picks up the coffee pot and pours her a cup.
Daria: Um, do I want to know...
Lynn: A long weekend many years ago. (Beat.) I learned a lot. (Another beat.) I thought it would probably come in handy on the trip.
Daria: Um, have you ever...
Lynn: (She takes a swig and looks at Daria.) Do you really want to know? (Beat. She then looks into her coffee.) Go to bed. With your head wound, you shouldn't have stood watch tonight anyway. (She takes another swig. Daria gets up and walks over to the tent. As she pulls aside the flap, Lynn lowers her coffee mug interrupts her.) If you want, use my bedroll. It's still warm.
Daria: (Looking back.) Um, thanks. (Daria steps into the tent and closes the flap.)
Lynn takes another swig of coffee and looks at the sky. We can hear the jungle sounds return around the campsite. Lynn sets her mug down on the log, stands up, lets out a big sigh and begins what appears to be some form of martial arts routine for meditation.
Ext. View: We once again see the full moon with the clouds going by in front o f it. In addition to the jungle sounds, we hear the breathing in and out of Lynn's meditation. The scene fades to black.
Commercial Hell #2.
Daria and Jane are back in their same poses as the previous commercial. They both look off the screen.
Jane: So what did you have for lunch, Dr. Mike?
An off stage voice: Soup, a couple sandwiches, doughnut, soda. Typical lunch.
Daria: So, want to come out and let everyone see you finally?
Dr. Mike: (Off stage.) Not yet. I have a walk in planned soon. Just not yet.
Jane and Daria look back at the camera.
Jane: How will the women be able to control themselves now?
Daria: More likely how will they be able to stay awake.
Dr. Mike: (Still off screen.) Hey, I heard that! There still is 11 more episodes in this series. I have lots of ideas you know.
Jane: Anyway, are we finally going to do this commercial?
Daria: Yup. (Beat.) Hey Jane, do you like coffee?
Jane: Do I like coffee? That's like asking some teenie bopper if they like what ever teen band is hot that week. That's like asking some cop if he likes his nightstick. That's like asking me if I like to paint. That's like...
Daria: (Sighs.) Just read the line, Lane.
Jane: (Looking at the off screen cue card.) I would love to but I haven't seen someone with such horrible handwriting since... (She looks at Daria who looks like she's getting angry.) Um, why, yes, I do like coffee. Why do you ask, Daria?
Daria: Well, Lane. I'm here today to introduce Cynic Coffee. (She holds up a coffee can.)
Jane: (Practicing her really bad acting skills.) Cynic Coffee? What is that?
Daria: It's a new special blend that was created just for today's cynic.
Jane: (Hamming it up.) That sounds interesting. Can I take a taste?
Daria: Sure, Jane. Here you go. (She puts the coffee can down and hands Jane a coffee mug with "Cynic Coffee" written on the front of it. Jane takes it and smells the fumes.)
Jane: (Eyes are beginning to water.) Damn, this smells (Cough.) wonderful. (Cough.) But what does it (Cough.) taste like?
Daria: (Smirking.) Why don't you take a taste and tell us?
Jane looks at her mug and then to Daria with a look of worry. She then looks off screen with a pleading face probably at her agent. She sighs, tries to build up her resolve and takes a gulp. It goes down hard.
Jane: (She almost chokes. Loud.) Damn, that's bitter!
Daria: It's how a modern cynic gets his or her strength for the dark day ahead. Cynic Coffee for today's cynic. (She holds the coffee pot up again.)
Jane: (She takes another swig and tries not to hack.) Damn, that's good (Cough.) coffee.
Ext. View: Early morning at the campsite. A morning mist covers everything. We see Lynn stirring a pot hanging over the campfire. The coffee pot also sits over the fire pit and a stack of metal camp bowls sit on the log nearby. After a second, Lynn leans the stirring spoon against the side of the pot, reaches into her backpack, pulls out what looks like beef jerky, and breaks bits of it off dropping them into the pot. We hear some movement within the tent and Quinn pokes her head out and takes a look around. She looks like she hasn't slept well. She sighs, goes back into the tent and reemerges a few minutes later dressed in her jungle coverall. She stumbles over to the campfire and sits down on the log. Lynn hands Quinn a mug of coffee.
Quinn: Thanks.
Lynn: (Trying to judge Quinn's morning mood.) So how did you sleep, Quinn?
Quinn: (She takes a long swig of the coffee before lowering the mug and answering.) Not very well. Had this tree root in my back all night. It was like that story with the banana and the Duchess.
Lynn: (Slight smirk.) I think you mean the pea and the princess.
Quinn: Whatever. (Beat.) Um, Lynn, can I talk to you?
Lynn: (A tad surprised.) Um, sure, Quinn.
Quinn: We're in trouble, aren't we?
Lynn looks at Quinn and sees something like worry in her eyes. She thinks for a minute while dishing out some porridge into a bowl.
Lynn: (Handing Quinn the bowl and a spoon.) I wouldn't call it trouble. I'm concerned but I'm sure we'll get out of this fine. (Beat.) How are you holding up, Quinn?
Quinn sits there for a second stirring her porridge and trying to figure out her thoughts.
Lynn: You're worried, aren't you? (Quinn nods. Lynn takes some time dishing out her own porridge.) Quinn, I'm not too good at this so why don't you just tell me what is on your mind.
Quinn looks around for a second and then back at her bowl.
Quinn: I didn't want to come on this trip because I knew it was going to be hard but I never thought I would be stuck out in the middle of nowhere, survive a plane crash, have to eat snake, and walk a bazillion miles just to get out alive.
Vincent pops out of the tent wearing his jungle jumpsuit, sees the two girls sitting there, nods his good morning, and goes off into the jungle with some toilet paper.
Lynn: Quinn, we have a pretty good chance of getting out of here alive. Vincent is an experienced traveler and explorer, we know where we are and where we're headed, we have both food and water, none of us is really injured, and the weather isn't that bad.
Quinn sits there for a second and thinks this over. The tent flap goes back again and Jane pokes her head out, squinting against the light. She nods a greeting to the two girls on the log and goes off into the jungle also with toilet paper in the same direction as Vincent. She eats a spoonful of porridge. She is pleasantly surprised.
Quinn: Wow! This oatmeal is pretty good.
Lynn: It's not oatmeal, it's porridge, Quinn.
Quinn: Whatever. What's in it?
Lynn: (Looking into her bowl and taking a taste also.) Nuts 'n honey.
Quinn: No, I'm serious. What did you put in here? (5)
Lynn: (Looking strangely at Quinn.) Nuts, some honey, a handful of trail mix, and some beef jerky. (She's takes this good mode of Quinn's to use it to her advantage.) You know Quinn. This whole trip would be a lot easier if you could relax a bit.
Quinn nods her approval as she already has eaten another bite of porridge. Lynn just looks on with a slight smirk.
Ext. View: Off in the jungle somewhere. Vincent has his back towards us. After a second, he appears to pull up something on his front and begins to walk back to the camp. Jane appears around a tree and they just about bump into each other. They step back from each other.
Jane: Um...
Vincent: Um, good morning, Jane.
Jane: Good morning, Vincent.
Vincent: (With a small smile on her face.) That's becoming easier for you, isn't it?
Jane: (Folding her hands across her chest.) It is since I don't know who my father is now. It's gotten real easy to say.
Vincent: Is that what is bothering you?
Jane: It's a start. (Beat.) We just went through this with Daria. I was hoping my family didn't have any problems like her's does.
Vincent: Jane, you're my daughter. Amanda and I were real careful about that.
Jane: Oh, you were?
Vincent: Yes, we were. (Beat.) Plus after each child, we double checked with blood tests.
Jane: (After thinking this over for a bit.) I just don't feel comfortable with the idea of you and Mom with other...
Vincent: Jane...
Jane: (Holding up a hand to Vincent.) Just give me time.
Vincent gives a small smile, hands her the toilet paper, and walks off. Jane walks behind a tree and we hear the sound of a zipper.
Ext. View: The campsite. Quinn, Lynn, Jane, and Vincent are sitting on the log eating their breakfast. After a beat, we hear some moaning from inside the tent. Quinn, Lynn and Jane just smirk.
Vincent: I take it Daria is not a morning person?
Lynn: I almost wished her and AP had hooked up. Neither one of them are morning people.
Daria stumbles out of the tent half asleep and stumbles over to the campfire. Jane holds out a cup o f coffee to her with a smirk which Daria takes. As she raises the mug up to drink, something clicks in Daria's head and she look at Jane. Jane just looks at her with a smile and takes a good drink of her own coffee. Daria makes a decision and takes a chug. Afterwards Lynn hands her a bowl and a spoon and Daria also sits on the log.
Daria: (After a few bites.) Damn, this is good. (Looks up.) Who made this?
Quinn: (Happily.) Lynn did. (She returns to cleaning out her bowl with her spoon.)
Daria: (Turning to Lynn.) I didn't know you could cook.
Lynn: I can cook outdoors. Indoors, AP always wants to help and you know how that is.
Daria: (Looking in her bowl.) Um, I forgot to ask. What happened after the crash? (they all look at her.) I mean some of you have bandages on.
Jane: (After a quick look at Quinn and with a smirk.) Quinn got a boot to the head.
Daria: (Confused.) Excuse me?
Quinn: She means I hit my head on her knee when we went down.
Jane: That's why I'm limping. If it wasn't for Quinn's hard head...
Quinn: Hey!
Daria: (Pointing to the bandage on Jane's arm.) What about that?
Jane: (She lifts her arm up to look at the bandage.) I scraped it climbing out of the plane.
Lynn: I have a few bruises but I feel better this morning.
Vincent: (After a swig of coffee.) Just a little stiff from the hike? (Daria, Jane, and Quinn quickly nod their heads and then regret it when their necks ache.)
Lynn: I stretched out during my watch.
Jane: (Smirk.) Care to share your secrets, Lynn?
Lynn: (After a swig of coffee.) Maybe later. Anyway, Lane, you can show the rest of them how to stretch out. You're the one who was on the track team. I have to clean up the breakfast dishes.
Lynn gathers up the dishes and goes off the screen to we can assume a brook.
Ext. View: A another dried up river bed. The camera view is from over head and from the front. Daria, now carrying the machete, has taken over point with Quinn behind her. Vincent and Lynn come next with Jane again at the rear. Jane is way back there.
Jane: (Singing very loudly in her poor voice.) "Ol' McDonald had a farm! E - I - E - I - O! And on that farm he had a..."
Everyone else: SHUT UP, JANE!
Jane: (Still singing.) "...pig. With a oink, oink here. An oink, oink there..."
Everyone else: SHUT UP, JANE!
Ext. View: The canopy of the jungle. We watch as a heavy amount of rain comes down through the leaves of the trees. The camera slowly works its way down towards the ground. The camera finally settles on the tent with the tarp hung over it. In the tent's door flap, we see our group looking out at the rain. They look bored. This must have been going on for a while now.
Ext. View: Another trail. Daria has the lead this time with Jane, Quinn, Lynn and Vincent following in a line.
Vincent: (Calling out.) You know I'm very surprised with all these trails we have found along the way. This is suppose to be where no one lives but we keep finding these trails.
Lynn: Vincent, don't jinx it.
Daria: (Off screen.) Too late.
The group catches up with Daria and gathers around her. We see a pretty thick wall of jungle in between 2 hills on either side.
Jane: (Thinking out loud.) We can go around...
The group looks at the hills. Both of them are fairly steep and covered in rocks.
Vincent: I don't think that that would be a good idea.
Daria: (She gets a good grip on the machete.) I guess we just have to bust a few, um, trees. (She takes a few practice swings to loosen up. Jane removes the hatchet from Daria's backpack.)
Jane: I'll help.
The rest of the group gathers behind Daria and Jane as they start in on the jungle. After a couple of swings, Daria looks up into a face.
Daria: (Jumps and drops the machete in surprise.) AAARRRRRR!!!!
The rest of the group comes running as Daria recovers and Jane begins to pull the plants away from the face.
Vincent: It appears to be some type of totem pole.
They step back as we finally get a good view of the totem pole. It's made out of wood, about 2 feet wide and has 6 heads that we can see but continues over their heads. It looks to be somewhat old.
Vincent: That's strange to see it out here where there are no native tribes.
Jane: Um, I didn't think there were any Indians in South America.
Vincent: Actually the totem pole or something similar is found in many cultures. The Aztecs used to dress up their columns with small faces carved into the sides of the stone.
Lynn: Can you make anything out on it, Vincent?
Vincent: (Studying it.) Not really. Archeology isn't my field of study anyway. (He pulls out the laptop and starts setting it up.) I will record the co-ordinates so that Professor Brown can come back and study it if he wants to. I'm not sure what he will make of it though.
Quinn: (Still studying it.) Those faces look familiar.
Daria: They can't be familiar to you, Quinn. It's from a different culture.
Quinn: Daria, listen to me. I've seen these faces before. (She points at one.) That one looks like "Jack."
Jane: "Jack"?
Quinn: Yea, before he got old.
Vincent: (it finally dawns on him what Quinn is talking about.) Jack Johnson from "One Life to Ruin." (7)
Quinn: Yea, that's him. They did an article in Waif magazine about where the hunks of yesteryear are now and he was one of them that they talked about. That face looks like that photo of him from twenty years ago.
Daria: A soap opera character? Isn't that a bit far fetched?
Lynn: Not really. (She points to another face.) That one looks like Jill St. Scape, the actress who used to do "Dishtowel," that comedy series that they still show on the Comedy Channel. (8)
Jane: (Shocked.) You actually watch the Comedy Channel?
Lynn: (Shrugs.) Sometimes I get in the mood to laugh. (They all stare at her open mouthed.) It only comes every once in a while. (Beat.) It's been about twenty years also since that show was on the air.
Jane: Ok...
Quinn: (Pointing to another face lower down.) And that one looks like Ruby Doo, that dog that solved mysteries...
Daria: ...from twenty years ago. (They all look at one another.)
Jane: ...Out here in the jungle.
Lynn: ...With no televisions.
Vincent: ...And no one to watch a TV even if one was here.
Quinn: That is strange. (9)
Daria: I'm glad you finally agree, Quinn.
The camera focuses on the faces on the totem pole.
Ext. View: Another jungle clearing. This one has trees hanging over the top of the clearing some and vines that stretch to the ground. The group comes into the clearing, Jane and Quinn in the lead with the rest following.
Vincent: Just a little more and we can stop for the evening.
Quinn: (Grumbling a bit under her breath.) Thank goodness, I'm getting tired.
Jane: (Also softly.) We all are, Quinn.
They continue through the clearing but Quinn's head comes up quickly as she looks off the screen.
Quinn: What's that? (She moves off the trail to look at something.)
Daria: I don't think that that is a good idea, Quinn.
Vincent: Quinn, don't go off separately.
Jane: Quinn, hold up.
They all go after Quinn.
Ext. View: Another part of the jungle. Quinn is standing there looking at something over her head. It appears to be a makeup mirror tied to a vine. The rest of the group catches up finally and stands around her.
Quinn: (Happily.) A makeup mirror!
Jane: (Looking at Daria and Lynn.) What is a makeup mirror doing out here in the jungle?
Lynn just shrugs.
Daria: Maybe we chucked one out of the plane when we ditched Quinn's makeup?
Lynn: Wrong direction.
Vincent: Quinn, I don't think you should touch it.
Quinn: Oh, don't be silly. What could go wrong? (She reaches up to pull it down.)
The other three girls: Quinn, wait!
As soon as Quinn gets hold of the mirror, the vine pulls and a net hidden underneath the groups gathers all of them up and hoists them into the jungle canopy into a big ball. It takes a second for the shock to settle for the group. The trap spins slowly on a vine.
Jane: Oh, nice going, Quinn.
Quinn: What did I do?
Vincent: Can anyone reach anything sharp?
Daria: (Looks down and sees the machete resting on the ground.) I dropped the machete when we got netted.
Lynn: I can't get to my knife.
Daria: Here, let me try. (Daria pulls along the netting trying to reach Lynn's arm. This, of course, sets the net spinning. After a couple of tries, we can see Daria turning green.) I don't think that this is going to work.
Jane: Here, let me try to reach it. (Jane does the same thing from the other side of Lynn with the same result, the net starts spinning but in the opposite direction.)
Daria: Lane, if you make me throw up again...
Jane: I got it! (Jane reaches Lynn's arm and pulls out a knife. She winds up cutting herself doing it.) Damn, that hurts.
Lynn: Um, watch it. It's sharp.
Jane: It's a little late for that, Lynn.
Vincent: Try cutting one of the ropes and we'll see if we can get down.
Jane starts sawing through whatever rope is in front of her. After cutting through about a dozen vines, the net begins to creak.
Vincent: Jane, don't cut anymore. I think that that's enough.
Jane slices through one more rope and the net falls apart, dumping the group on the jungle ground. Jane sits up rubbing her head.
Jane: Damn, that hurt.
Quinn: (Sitting up rubbing her side.) You didn't have to drop us so hard, Jane.
Lynn: (Also sitting up checking herself out.) Well, if you hadn't fallen for that trap, Quinn, we wouldn't have gotten caught.
Quinn: How was I supposed to know it was a trap?
Vincent: (Sitting up also.) Is everyone ok? (The group mumbles their agreement.) Where's Daria? (Everyone looks around.)
Lynn: (She finds a warm body beside her.) Over here beside me. (Lynn checks her out.) I think she hit her head on the way down as she's out cold again.
Jane looks up off screen and gets a worried look on her face.
Jane: Um, guys?
The rest of the group look up to see a large number of jungle tribesmen armed with spears has them circled and they are approaching slowly with the spears pointed at them. Lynn does another wrist flick and out pops a pistol. The safety comes off.)
Jane: (She holds Lynn back.) There's too many of them. (Lynn nods, safeties the gun but does not put it away.
The tribesmen come closer with their pointed spears and the group gets closer and closer and closer and...
The scene fades out and then we see:
To be continued...
***The End***
Quinn: (Voice over.) Next time on Dr Mike's the Jungle series:
*A large group of tribesmen walk through the jungle. Two of them carry a wooden support. Jane hangs underneath it bound to the limb by hand and foot. She doesn't look too happy about the situation.
*The entire group stands in a row open mouth gaping at something off screen. After a second, they pull back and look at Daria in shock.
*We see the group having a discussion while standing in what appears to be a native hut. After a second, Lynn throws open the door to the hut so she can storm out only to find about 20 native tribesmen leaning up against the door trying to listen in. As we fade out, we see the Canadibrit Title screen with Daria and Lynn's heads in 2 connected circles. The circles pull back and we see in Daria script: "Daria in the Jungle. Part #3. Coming soon..."
Footnotes:
1) Thanks to Wind_Lane in the IRC channel #Daria+ for making me up a list of survival gear for the group. I hope I have everything they need and the loads are balanced out correctly.
2) Thanks to Canadibrit for the suggestion of Lynn's arsenal and her various hiding places.
3) In reference to the season 3 episode, Jane's Addition. We discover that Jane can't sing worth a damn.
4) Mystic Spiral tried to get Lynn to wear an interesting costume in Canadibrit's The Blind Leading the Blunt. Thanks to Wind_Lane again for his help finding this one.
5) Anyone remember the cereal commercial this comes from?
6) Made up for this fic. I really have no expertise on this subject.
7) Made up for this fic. The title is familiar with "One Life to Live."
8) Made up for this fic also. The tital is familiar with the comedy soap opera "Soap." They showed it for quite a while on Comedy Central.
9) In Part #1 of this series, Quinn did not find it strange to find a place that served American style pizza in the jungle. The group had pizza for lunch during a layover on the flight down.
Notes:
This was a quick fic to write as I wound up having an eight hour block to write one day with out any interruptions. It was started on September 9th and finished on the 12th.
I am still working on my site located at http://www.tdjc.net. I obtained copies of the old pictures I used to have there and look forward to working them back into the site and starting the Pick a Caption page once again.
Once again, I would like to publicly thank Canadibrit for the time she takes out of her busy day to offer me assistance and for the use of her characters, Lynn and AP. If you want to learn more about her characters and her work, feel free to visit her website located at: http://www.geocities.com/canadibrit. Follow the fanfiction link towards the bottom of the page to find over three seasons of work written by Canadibrit. To the person on fanfiction.net who is unable or unwilling to leave their e-mail address so I can respond who wants to have all this information spoon fed to them, I kindly suggest they take the time and read her work instead of complaining. You're missing a wonderful series.
I'm looking for constructive feedback at the address listed at the head of this piece if anyone is interested.
